With Global Forum less than a month away, all attention this week turned toward doing whatever we could to help fulfill necessary tasks. This involved those less glamorous jobs that have to get done: finding tables and chairs for the venue, food for luncheons and everything in-between.
However, this week also saw the first anticipatory event for Global Forum, “Abolitionist Conversations.” This panel discussion, similar to what participants will see at Global Forum, was carried out between Jack Dorsey (co-founder of Twitter) and David Batstone as discussed the role of social media in movements like that against human trafficking. Spoken to a sold-out, carrying capacity audience at the Hub in San Francisco, the event was a great success. It was so much fun to be there and witnessing Not For Sale in action. I was in charge of the Freedom Store table that night and, as expected, a lot of our new merchandise seems to be quite popular!
This week also saw me back to work with some Freedom Sunday projects. Although it is next spring, it is important to be thinking one step ahead with something as big as Freedom Sunday will be in March. I’ve written one and am in the middle of another “study” of different Biblical texts we have selected for a new Bible study. This week has consisted of me reading over the shortest book in the Bible, Philemon and getting a better grasp of Paul’s stance on Christianity, slavery and how that all applies back to the modern church.
Along with some editing jobs, I have a lot of fun figuring out more about the Freedom Store and attending a meeting with the other shop owners in the same complex where we have our store/office. I have a total of 4 months in retail and have never been one for shopping, so it’s been fun looking at this experience from a business perspective and attracting more customers. Lots of fun things planned for October and the fall season, so if you are in the neighborhood, you should stop by the Harbor Village shops!
Despite rising stress levels at work, we are doing well here at the house, cooking and re-arranging furniture. As the clouds continue to sit over our house and the sun tries so desperately to show, a few of us are waiting for Global Forum to arrive just so we can see some sun again!
